BURLINGTON >> Lewis Mills sophomore Samantha Chadwick proved that age is just a number even for the young, leading the Spartans to a 47-34 girls basketball win over Northwestern in the season-opener for both teams.
Chadwick, a 5-8 guard, had 10 of Mills’ 26 points at the half, ending with a game-high 17. But her contributions, too, were more than a number.
“Sam worked hard last year and the game is slowing down for her,” said Mills Coach Joe Capitani. “Everybody’s gotten better, but, with her, we’re a lot more balanced.
Senior center Samira Abdelrehim is always a force on the boards at 6-feet-2, but didn’t find her scoring push until the final quarter. Then, she scored 10 of her 14 points to help put the game away for good.
“Sam takes some of the pressure off her,” said Capitani.
Both teams came out more poised than a season-opener often allows. Turnovers more often came from over-enthusiasm than nerves. Each team broke the other’s press with ease.
“There were some bright points. I’m not disheartened,” said Northwestern Coach Fred Williams. “We had a couple of second-half runs.”
The Spartans led the entire game, but couldn’t find the hammer against a Highlander team with balanced scoring (Addie Hester had a team-high 8 points) but too many fouls and too many misses.
In the end, Abdelrehim was the convincer, but Chadwick often provided critical points and backbone on offense and defense along the way.
“I practice my shots a lot,” she grinned. “I’m more aggressive and vocal this year.”
