WOODBURY >> Gilbert/Northwestern football (3-0) completed the demolition of all three of its Pequot Uncas-West Division opponents with a 42-7 win at Nonnewaug High School (1-2) Saturday afternoon.
Division titles will be awarded only for the two overall divisions (Uncas and Sassacus), based on overall records within their two subdivisions.
Nevertheless, after a combined 134-25 Yellowjacket point total against its three Uncas-West opponents — Lewis Mills, Canton and now Nonnewaug — there’s no doubt about who’s king of the West.
“I’m enjoying the ride,” said junior running back Billy Komons, who racked up 171 yards rushing against the Chiefs following a 177-yard game against Canton a week ago.
“A lot of people doubted us at the start of the season (G/N graduated most of its starting line), but we knew we’d be okay.”
The Yellowjackets are more than okay except for two facets that niggle at Coach Scott Salius.
“We make mistakes early, then we control it,” said Salius. “It takes something to get them going. Further down the road, we can’t let that happen.”
“Our game plan is controlling the ball running,” he said.
Despite that plan’s success so far, Salius knows he might need an option down that road.
“We had just three pass completions coming into today’s game,” he said.
Saturday, junior quarterback Brad Lissy was 6-for-10 for 92 yards, a marked improvement.
But the early mistakes continued.
The Chiefs, led by running back Zach Mauro (12 carries, 78 yards) took the opening kickoff to their own 26, then, after two first downs, stalled at the Gilbert 49.
Joe Contento’s punt and a Gilbert personal foul pushed the Jackets back to their own 17. A bad snap in the shotgun turned the ball over to Nonnewaug on the four yard line.
Mauro carried it in for a 7-0 Nonnewaug lead.
The ‘something’ happened.
Gilbert/Northwestern snapped into control.
E.J. Claman righted the ship with a 38-yard scoring run for a first-quarter tie, with Chris Nanni’s kick (6-for-6 on point-afters).
Komons ran for a 20-yard score early in the second, then another nine in his 124-yard quarter for a 21-7 halftime lead.
Spencer Green went 30 yards for the first second-half score; LIssy kept it for a yard for another; Jake Roth finished off with 27 yards for the final touchdown.
This far into the season, an early Yellowjacket mistake is a bad sign for the opposition.
G/N hosts 0-3 Windsor Locks/Suffield/East Granby next Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Nonnewaug is at 3-0 Stafford/East Windsor/Somers Friday night at 6:30.
