Greenwich Academy and Sacred Heart Greenwich began their respective swimming seasons by competing against each other and Canterbury School Saturday at Brunswick School.
The Gators went 2-0 on the day, defeating Sacred Heart, 62-38, and Canterbury, 72-28. Sacred Heart beat Canterbury, 78-23.
“It was a very fun start to the season,” GA first-year coach Michael Sabala said. “This is a hard-working, athletic group that really push each other to succeed. They did great in our first meet.”
The meet began with Greenwich’s Academy’s foursome of Paula Scanlan, Claire Michalik, Hannah Subramaniam and Caroline Pennington winning the 200-yard medley relay in 1:51.66.
Pennington placed first in the 200-freestyle relay in 2:00.37. Subramaniam won the 200 individual medley in 2:20.24, followed by Elisa Taylor of Sacred Heart (2:24.50).
Michalik touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle for GA (24.90) and teammate Avery Sammons finished second in 26.36. In the diving event, Annie Bingle from Sacred Heart placed first on the 1-meter board. She earned a score of 246.90. Greenwich Academy’s Ashlyn Wahl was the runnerup (218.35).
Hutton Saunders of the Gators won the 100 butterfly (1:03.91) and Emma O’Connor from the Tigers took second (1:05.76). Scanlan was the 100 freestyle winner (56.37) and Caleigh Pope from Sacred Heart finished second in 59.39.
Pennington posted a first-place finish for GA in the 500 freestyle (5:14.32) and Emma O’Connor of the Tigers was second in 5:47.06. Saunders, Madeleine Holden, Sammons, and Lindsay McBurney teamed up to win the 200- freestyle relay for the Gators (1:47.30).
Scanlan won the 100 backstroke in 1:00.92 for Greenwich Academy.
