CLINTON >> The Valley Regional/Old Lyme football team looked like Class M playoff contenders on Friday night.
Senior quarterback Matt Sapere tossed three touchdown passes and ran for one more in leading the Warriors to an impressive 37-13 Pequot Conference South victory over Morgan at Bob Brigockas Field.
Valley’s defense, led by juniors Roan Sullivan and Ernest Jean-Pierre, also had a big night. The Warriors came away with four interceptions, including two by Jean-Pierre, and three sacks while blanking the Huskies in the second half.
Sapere completed 9 of 22 passes for 216 yards. He also rushed for 67 yards on 11 carries with one touchdown. Sapere’s favorite target was senior Garrett Burdick, who caught five passes for 152 yards with two touchdowns.
Burdick also had an interception.
After a scoreless first quarter, Valley junior defensive back Cole Ensinger corralled a tipped pass from Morgan quarterback Madden Ward and raced 62 yards for a touchdown. Burdicks’s kick made it 7-0.
The Warriors (3-0) regained possession less than a minute later and Sapere found Burdick with a 44 yard scoring toss that made it 14-0 with 9:24 left in the second quarter.
Morgan (2-1) responded with a nine play, 79 yard touchdown drive. Ward went 3-for-3 passing and capped things with a 24 yard TD run.
Sapere, however, hit Burdick with a 45 yard pass on the Warriors next possession. Four plays later, Burdick caught a short 2 yard pass in the end zone to give the Warriors a 20-6 advantage.
The Huskies answered again. Ward completed two terrific fourth down passes to Harry White and Ryan Caldwell before junior Isaac Eriksen ran for an 11 yard touchdown with 43 seconds left that made it 20-13 at halftime.
Burdick nailed a 21-yard field goal on Valley’s first possession of the second half to stretch the lead to 23-13.
Valley went on a 63-yard scoring march midway through the third quarter. Sapere hit Jason O’Brien with a 36-yard pass, then ran 17 yards to set the Warriors up with a first and goal at the Morgan 3.
Sapere scored on a 1-yard TD plunge on fourth down to give the Warriors a 30-13 advantage with 5:11 left in the third quarter.
Sapere then capped Valley’s big night with a 29-yard touchdown toss to junior tight end Jon Balocca.
