Johnny Burns, a 1995 New London graduate who participated in the Whalers’ 1992 championship team, was hired Thursday to become the school’s next head coach.
A Springfield College graduate, Burns works for Connecticut’s child protection services and has been a youth coach in Norwich, The Day of New London reported. This is his first high school head coaching job.
He played fullback and linebacker at New London in the early 1990s and contributed to the team’s 1992 repeat state championship team as a sophomore.
Burns replaces Juan Roman, who resigned after last season to spend more time watching his two sons — D. Major and J. Hunter — play at Yale. Roman had been running the team’s offseason training while the school looked for a new coach.
Roman spent two seasons as the Whalers’ coach. New London was 9-2 and reached the Class L quarterfinals in his first season. Last year, the Whalers were 4-6.
