MIDDLETOWN >> It was the Will Levis Show at Palmer Field Friday night.
The Penn State-bound Xavier quarterback threw for 347 yards on a brilliant 21-for-29 performance good for five touchdown passes. Just for fun he ran for a sixth as Xavier outclassed East Haven 56-3 in front of 1,000 fans.
“He showed us what Will Levis is capable of,” said Xavier coach Andy Guyon. “He was a great leader in practice all week leading us to recover from that loss to Cross. He was great tonight.”
Levis set the tone early, connecting with Kyle MacGillis on a 72-yard catch and run that put the Falcons (2-2) ahead 7-0 with 8:29 left in the first quarter.
Levis hit Adrian Hyatt from 12 yards out following a fumbled kickoff just 34 seconds later and the rout was on.
“We played well tonight,” said Guyon. “Our defense was very good and our offense did the things they could do.”
The Xavier defense held the Yellowjackets to 16 net yards for the game, a stunning minus 28 in the second half. The Easties (1-3) played without feature running back Michael Manning who was hurt early in the game and did not return.
Xavier played without its feature back, Ty Abrahams, who sprained an ankle in the Cross game. Guyon said he should be able to play next week at Fairfield Prep.
Xavier led 14-3 after one as East Haven got a 23-yard field goal from Evan Damian with 2:19 left in the quarter. But Xavier poured it on in the second as Levis hit TD passes of 28 yards (MacGillis) and one yard (Alex Kulasenski), then ran one in himself from 15 yards out and the Falcons were out of sight at 35-3 at the break.
Levis finished his night with a two-yard TD to Michael Femc and Xavier got a 19-yard TD run from Nick Hasselman and a four-yard touchdown from second-string quarterback Ryan Miner to round out the scoring.
