Maybe Bacon Academy’s for real after all.
Peter Kazibwe ran for 170 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Bacon Academy to an impressive 34-18 victory over New London Saturday in Colechester.
It was Bacon Academy’s first victory over New London since 2004, when the program last made the state playoffs.
Quarterback Sean Kelly hit Dan Narlock for a 39-yard touchdown pass on the game’s second play from scrimmage and Kazibwe ran for two of his touchdowns as Bacon bolted out to a 21-0 first-quarter lead.
Elijah Parker’s 13-yard touchdown catch from Melquan Gomez (10-for-28, 81 yards) for New London cut the lead to 21-6 at halftime. Devon Sousa’s 7-yard run pulled the Whalers to within 21-12. But Kazibwe bolted 49 yards for another score to keep New London at arm’s length.
Kelly completed 14 of 19passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns. Kazibwe (pronounced KAZ-ib-way) also had two interceptions. Paul Chasse had the other two.
Bacon improved to 2-0 and faces Ledyard at home this Saturday. New London fell to 1-1.
“I’m from West Haven so I don’t know the whole history over Bacon football,” coach Erik Larka told The Day of New London. “But I know when they made the playoffs they were in the (ECC) Small Division playing the same teams twice. So, yeah, we sold it to the kids if they want to get respect they have to beat teams like this. For the 55 kids here and coaches, this is the biggest win in program history.”
