WINSTED >> Hyde/Career/Whitney hopped on two Gilbert/Northwestern fumbles in the fourth quarter on its way to three touchdowns and a come-from-behind 20-10 win at Gilbert’s Van Why Field Saturday afternoon.
In a game of turnovers, the Yellowjackets, held a 7-0 lead through the first half, looking every ounce the better team.
Holding on, they recovered a Howling Wolves fumble in the third quarter leading to a 26-yard field goal
The ‘Jackets de-railed in the fourth as H/C/W junior Jhavion Haddock ate up 78 of his 151 rushing yards for the day (131 in the second half).
“I always get a lot of work,” Haddock grinned. “Me and my captains had to pump up our teammates at halftime. They had their heads down.”
“We came out flat,” said H/C/W coach Brandon McCormick. “We talked about it at the half and made a few changes on defense to take more advantage of opportunities.”
“Turnovers – that’s what kills you,” said Gilbert/Northwestern coach Scott Salius. “We gave up 14 points on ours and got three on theirs.
“I thought we were fairly evenly matched, but the turnovers tipped it in their favor.”
If the Howling Wolves came out flat, G/N was on fire for much of the first half.
The Yellowjackets stopped H/C/W in four downs after the opening kickoff, then plowed from their own 36 to a touchdown in eight methodical plays, the longest gains from quarterback Ben Schiffer (12 yards) and Billy Komons (11 yards).
Joe Columbie kicked the extra point just four-and-a-half minutes into a game that had all the makings of a Yellowjacket romp.
G/N established the running part of their option in the first drive. After another four-and-out performance from the defense, the passing side hit its first sputter in a 4-for-13 day for Schiffer.
Howling Wolf linebacker Latrell Alston intercepted Schifer’s first pass attempt of the day.
The defense held again, but, without the air attack, the Yellowjackets couldn’t move the ball either.
Schiffer connected with Komons for a 16-yard pass in the second quarter, but the defenses played even.
G/N got to the H/C/W 26-yard line, giving up the ball on a fourth-down incomplete pass. The Wolves got to the Yellowjacket 38, throwing an interception in the end zone that ended the half.
Nursing the 7-0 lead, G/N created a huge break early in the third quarter after finding nothing on offensive in four downs.
An H/C/W runner fumbled Jeffko’s punt; G/N’s Tyler May recovered it on the Wolves’ 47-yard-line. Schiffer and E.J. Claman broke for long runs. Then the offense went backwards for two losses and an incomplete pass.
On fourth down, Columbie set up for a 26-yard field goal, 10-0.
The Yellowjacket offense literally couldn’t hold on.
Taking over on downs at their own 21, Schiffer hit Tucker Kreh for 13 yards; Komons ran for another 10. Then H/C/W’s Nicholas May was the last one down on a squirting fumble at the G/N 18.
The Wolves took seven plays to carry it in, the last three at the start of the fourth quarter with a final one-yard run by quarterback Tyrese Thomas and point-after from Jonathan Browne, 10-7.
Then the turnover frenzy began in earnest.
G/N went five plays from its own 20, fumbling the sixth to the Wolves. H/C/W ran one play; Schiffer intercepted a pass for G/N on the Wolves’ second play.
On Gilbert/Northwestern’s first play from scrimmage on its own 22-yard line, the ball turned loose again. H/C/W’s Ralik Garvins picked it up, running it into the end zone for 14-10 Wolves with Browne’s kick.
The Yellowjackets ran four plays, including a busted fake punt. H/C/W took over on the G/N 27. Haddock used three plays to run it in for the final score, 20-10 after G/N blocked the extra point.
“The first turnover score gave us momentum,” said Coach McCormick.
“Coming back feels great,” said Haddock.
Both teams are now 3-2.
Hyde/Career/Whitney goes to Windsor Locks against Windsor Locks/Suffield/East Granby next Friday.
