ELLINGTON >> Mark Hickman scored three touchdowns to become Ellington’s all-time leading scorer as the Knights defeated Pequot East rival Cromwell/Portland, 34-20, for the first time in program history.
Ellington led 21-6 at halftime, but Cromwell/Portland (2-1) got within a touchdown twice in the second half. The first was on Nelson Carlson’s 12-yard run and the second on Kristian Sapp’s 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
But Ellington responded with Hickman every time. He scored a 4-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Later, with Ellington facing 4th down, Hickman caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Christian Rider in the corner of the end zone to put Ellington up 34-20.
Izaiah Castro-Vega added a 13-yard touchdown and Wellington Silva returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown for Ellington, which improved to 3-0 and is a game ahead of Cromwell/Portland in the Pequot East division.
