MILFORD >> Turnovers and penalties are a recipe for disaster for any football team. Law found that out Friday night in a 28-12 loss to visiting East Lyme.
In a game pitting two winless teams, it was East Lyme from the ECC that converted a pair of first-half turnovers into touchdowns to race to a 14-6 halftime lead.
East Lyme sophomore quarterback Dylan Hatajik capped off an eight-play drive following a Law fumble with a 3-yard touchdown to give East Lyme a 7-0 lead with 40 seconds left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, East Lyme freshman Dalton Franco tipped a Mitchell Smith pass and older brother Travis Franco caught the deflection and returned it 30 yards for a 14-0 lead.
“This was a long time coming,” East Lyme (1-4) head coach Ray Bagos said. “We’re young, but they have been getting better each week. They haven’t jumped ship and they stuck together. I am glad they finally got something positive out of all their hard work.”
Law pulled within 14-6 when Smith found Tucker Saley on a 49-yard scoring strike halfway through the second quarter. The Lawmen then forced an East Lyme punt and moved to midfield, but a pair of penalties forced them back to their own 17, where the drive stalled.
Law committed 10 penalties for 104 yards.
“Turnovers and penalties have been the story of our season,” Law coach Derrick Lewis said. “We’re just not a good football team right now, but we’ll just keep working. It’s the only thing we can do.”
That was as close as Law would get. East Lyme increased its lead to 28-6 on a Ryan Janovic 31-yard run before Hatajik found Evan Tryon wide open in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown connection midway though the fourth quarter.
“I expected a better effort from us, to play a little more mature, mistake-free football, but it didn’t happen,” Lewis said. “We’re searching for a win and can’t find it. We’ll keep plugging away and try to fix our mistakes.”
Law (0-5) tacked on a score on a Smith-to-Tyler Cavallaro 14-yard pass with 3:02 left in the game.
