TORRINGTON >> The Wolcott Tech varsity football program will take a break this year due to low numbers, Athletic Director Ray Tanguay said today.
“Of our 31 total kids out for the program, just 12 are eligible to play varsity,” Tanguay said. “The numbers include 14 freshmen, seven of whom have never played before. The majority of the others are second-year sophomores.
“The coaching staff and I met and decided this was the right way to go.”
Tanguay emphasized that head coach Jamie Coty and assistant coach Jenn Stango would remain with the program, along with a new JV assistant the school hopes to hire before the start of the season.
Wolcott Tech’s varsity schedule has already been pulled off the CIAC website. The JV schedule, established a year ago will remain in place.
“Similar to what a few other schools in the area have done to build their programs back up, we’re planning to move forward by taking a step back,” Tanguay said.
“Instead of having to play kids on both sides of the ball, now we can have an offensive team, a defensive team and special teams while giving our younger kids experience.”
