Harvard snatched up two of Connecticut’s stop senior football talent this past week.
Staples’ lineman Jackson Ward made his verbal commitment on Saturday, reported the Staples High School student-run WWPT 90.3-FM.
Today, Brookfield’s all-state linebacker Bobby Drysdale also made his verbal commitment to play for the Crimson in 2016, coach Rich Angarano said.
Drysdale, listed at 6-foot-1, 210 pounds, is perhaps the best of Brookfield’s talented senior class which has led the program to consecutive state championship games. Brookfield lost to St. Joseph in the 2013 Class M final and then won last year’s Class M-Large final, 14-0, over Berlin.
“We’re extremely happy, myself and his parents, and we’re excited about his decision,” said Angarano, who said Drysdale impressed while attending camps at Harvard, Yale and UMass, among others.
“He went to everyone’s camps and now that he’s decided, he can slow down and concentrate on having that great final year of high school before focusing on a great college career.”

In two varsity seasons, Drysdale has averaged 5.7 tackles per game and made 12 sacks. He’s also excelled as the team’s primary ballcarrier with 3,592 career yards and 51 touchdowns on 450 carries (average 8.0 yards per carry). He is a two-time CHSCA All-State linebacker and was New Haven Register First-Team All-State.
“He’s a tremendous two-way player,” said Angarano, whose team won the Class M-Large championship over Berlin thanks, in part, to Drysdale’s 127-yards rushing, a touchdown, and four sacks. “It’s obvious he did what he had to do in the classroom and did what he had to do on the field and did what he had to do in a live interview. (Harvard) is a tremendous opportunity. We’re very very happy.”
Staples’ Ward, listed as 6-foot-3, 285 pounds as a junior, was an All-FCIAC West offensive lineman. He also starred as a defensive tackle, where he made 19 tackles, three sacks and made a critical interception in Staples’ 3-0 loss to Xavier.
