New to CTHSFB… what are some of the best rivalry thanksgiving games around?
Ansonia vs Naugatuck
Bob,
Maybe 20 years ago,its lost its shine.
Not sure of the records but im guessing Naugy hasn’t one more then 3 games in last 20 years most with Ansonia blowouts.
Staples v. Greenwich is historically a great good rivalry.
New Canaan vs Darien might just be the best rivalry in the state….over the last 10-15 years these two teams are usually top5 programs in the state.
the biggest crowd i have ever seen at a CT high school football game was between NC and Darien in 2008 in front of about 10,000 people. this year they only sold 6,000 tickets and they were all pre orders!
You had to see the 94 ansonia naugy game a reported 12,000 people at Nolan field
The NC Darien game is probably the hottest game to see. Three crowns most likely will go to the winner should they sweep states playoffs that is..
!st the “unofficial” FCIAC champion, 2nd the winner of this game will most likely get the overall state #1 crown should they sweep their states playoff games which is a definite possibility and 3rd of course is the winner is the local Turkey Bowl champion for 2016. If it was at Boyle it would sell out but since its at NC it will sell out by Tuesday I think..No ticket sales at the door.
NC vs. Darien tickets went on sale beginning at 12:00pm today. According to the Darien HS website, they have sold out as of 12:36pm. It took 36 minutes…
From the Darien Public School Website:
Darien Turkey Bowl Tickets Sold Out
Posted 11/21/2016 12:36PM
Ticket sales in Darien have ended.
lol
This is confirmed. Both schools have sold their tickets already. No walk-ups.
Ridiculous that game is being played there. Forget outsiders they shut out people in their own communities by not moving it.Shame on both schools. I’m an FCIAC guy and I hope they both get beat in states so they both fall off their high white horses.
For the record, this is NC’s decision… I’m not sure why though, considering the game should have been scheduled in Darien.
From what I’ve heard/know, the Darien football program wants it moved.
This is ridiculous. There has to be some compromise that can be made with Stamford/Boyle. I liked the idea of playing Stamford v. Westhill at 9am and Darien v. NC at 11:30am or something along those lines.
Will never happen. The latest any Thanksgiving Day game should start is 10:30, everybody has things to do, family to see…
Agreed.
I know Thanksgiving football is tradition but with how the playoffs are now it would really be better that all the games were on Wednesday night. Give the playoff teams an extra day of rest.
Yes, people will say “well not everyone makes the playoffs” but 32 teams do – it’s not like it’s only a handful of teams that are affected.
We’re talking about a difference of an hour. Not sure why it is such a stretch.
Because people still have to travel, people start dinner in the afternoon, etc etc. 10:30 am is the stretch, frankly.
Especially the added headache of dealing with two games? What if the weather turns, what if one game goes exceptionally long…
Forget it. Not happening.
Thanksgiving football an awful tradition. There are maybe 3 good games in the state. Rivalries are dead. Get rid of the game and extend the playoffs!

How is that an upset?
league should have mandated they play Wednesday night at Boyle. They mandated every other dumb ass decision over the past 50 years why stop now.
It’s no longer the championship game, that’s why. It was only mandated because the league had control of the championship game.
Stamford High gets first-crack at Boyle. It’s their home field. Was never an issue when the Westhill at Stamford game was being played all these past years on Wednesday night. However, this year, I guess Stamford decided they wanted their rivalry game played like the 90% or so of the others on Thursday morning. That was decided a long time ago. Really nobody’s at fault. Circumstance.
Disagree wholeheartedly. First off, only 67% of the games are played Thursday morning. I just counted. Not 90% or so. Stop exaggerating to try to twist the stats in your favor.
Secondly, calling it circumstance is such a cop out. Someone is definitely at fault if they can’t get to a compromise.
Dear “Anonymous”-
SPB is 100% correct; there is no way you can play a Thanksgiving game later than 10:30. It’s already a stretch. People want to travel and be with families. (Including Darien and NC) Now you want to have two games played at the same site on the same holiday? Not happening.
And in what world does a high school football doubleheader as you say “9 a.m. and 11:30” at the same site work? Answer: nowhere. The players for your “9 a.m” game wouldn’t be off the field until 11:30. How could the other game start at 11:30? The other teams need to warm up and wouldn’t start the now AFTERNOON game until 12:45 at the earliest. Plus, the stands would have to empty for the new gate. This isn’t girls’ softball where it’s possible for a quick-turnaround doubleheader. This is FOOTBALL.
And it’s not a “cop out.” Yes, it would be great if the game was at Boyle at 10:30, but it can’t happen this year. It is STAMFORD’s home site for that morning and they have no obligation to change it for NC-Darien. It would be putting the A.D’s in an awkward position. “Jimmy, can you please move your own Thanksgiving Day game OFF your home field so WE can play our Thanksgiving Day game there? Okay, well how about changing the time for us?” Again, not going to happen. The FCIAC no longer is involved because it’s not a championship game.
Other sites were looked into, but were simply not possible.
Thanksgiving Day should be first round of playoffs.
Open it up to 16 teams. play on Thanksgiving then the following Friday and Saturday and then the following Saturday.
More teams make it and teams get full rest in playoffs.
Have to start season a week earlier which shouldn’t
be an issue.
Any teams that don’t make playoffs can set up competitive games with other schools.
Thinking out of the box.
sorry thanksgiving would have to be week 2 of playoffs
@Anon-
Also, I’m not “exaggerating to twist the stats in my favor.” We are talking about FCIAC football here, right? There is only ONE GAME in the league that is not being played on Thanksgiving morning: Danbury vs. Ridgefield. The other 15 league members are all playing on Thanksgiving. That’s 15 out of 17. That is 88.2%. hence my “90% or so” statement.
Just accept the fact that there was nothing that could have been done except for moving the NC-Darien game to Wednesday night at Boyle. I would have been okay with that. In fact, that would have been ideal for a high school football fan like me! But I know the overall sentiment (historically) in those two towns has been they’d rather have the game played on Thanksgiving morning. They prefer Thanksgiving morning football.
Move the game to Sacred Heart, Fairfield U or the Yale Bowl. CCSU too maybe. A lot of options.
i dont understand why you feel they should do that? to accommodate some fans from other towns? all darien and new canaan students got tickets if they so chose. all parents of kids on both teams got tickets guaranteed. so the only people who may have been left out in the rain were fans that have no “true” affiliation with the program. as a former player from a couple decades ago and a supporter since forever, no one really cares about what the casual observer wants when it comes to what the players and coaches want.
the guantlet was thrown down to the CIAC by Lou and Rob. They said to honor the FCIAC Championship game and make it official and they would move the game to BOYLE Wed. night. The CIAC would not officially call the game the FCIAC Championship, so Lou told them to kick rocks and hes not losing the home game.
you seem to feel awfully slighted. now i understand your a Darien fan…and you have had a great run. but everyones time comes to an end. Maybe Rob knew his team was gonna get beat up by a much better team and decided hed rather have less people there then more….who knows. but unless Rob Trifone comes out publicly and complains about the site, you should just calm it down a bit there chief.
(ps. this whole thing was written in a light hearted “haha” tone in the event it came off alittle too antangonistic. all in good fun and respect)
You mean the FCIAC wouldn’t call it the FCIAC championship game, I’m sure. CIAC has nothing to do with it.
Regardless, *I’M* calling it the FCIAC championship game.
Follow me to Freedom.
RIDING YOUR WINGS BABY BIRD
You are one of the worst posters on this site in a while, and I mean that all in good fun and respect.
A lot of people associated with both programs were left out in the rain. If you played on the team last year, tough luck. If you are an older or younger sibling of someone on the team, tough luck, only two tickets per player. Also, what player wouldn’t want to play in front of a crowd 2x as large.
Your whole tangent about it being officially called the FCIAC Championship game and Lou sticking it to the CIAC is just made up. Lou, as he always does, complained at the beginning of the season and somehow slipped in a home game for NC against Darien when it should have been the opposite.
I’m not slighted in the least bit. I’ll be at the game and we will see if the run has come to an end. But stop vomiting words out and making stuff up… I mean that with all due respect, chief.

It’s not too late. Yale Bowl!
your opinion if your right to have i suppose. unlike you i like to think of myself as an informed poster.
the game isnt moving. the game was never moving. this has been listed as a NC home game all year long….yet you only started to complain this week. get off your soap box. i understand your a Darien fan. i dont think your a bad poster, i just think that your whining is becoming insidious. just give it up.
not calling it the fciac championship was one of Lou’s reasons for not moving the game. FCIAC has forced the move in the past. this time they werent going to be forced.
if fans cant make it due to ticket sales complain to the ADs for not having a better system.
why dont we discuss the teams vs. the venue. stop complaining. its not happening as far as the move goes.
i was respectful in my post. you were just being abrasive. i too can be abrasive but id rather discuss the teams.
cry me a river on the move…..if you feel that bad for folks who didnt get tickets (like myself) feel free to give yours away!
YOU’RE right. I should have said something about the game being a NC home game at the start of the season, but I don’t check stuff like that. An astute poster pointed out the mistake this week and how it should be a Darien home game. I found it interesting is all.
I don’t blame NC. If you can’t beat Darien at Boyle, might as well be a pain to everyone else and play it at Dunning. Unfortunately, if we find ourselves in this very same situation next year, don’t expect Darien to move it to Boyle. I hope you enjoy not seeing the game another year and the 1,000 tickets alloted to NC fans.
Re: New Canaan vs Darien
Bummed out I couldn’t get tickets, but that’s the breaks. Actual sell out time in Darien was closer to 15 minutes, it took until 12:36 to get it posted on the website!
Boyle would be nice, but if it’s not available, then it’s not available. Neither Stamford HS, nor New Canaan HS should be obligated to give up or move a home game for the benefit of a few thousand fans if the circumstances and location are not to their liking.
At least the game will be available to watch on HAN and other broadcast outlets. I’ll watch this one from home.
Good chance DHS plays their LL home opener at Boyle. No lights at DHS for a week night game. Won’t be the first time.
Since no tix, I’m gonna go see kid from Foran break state record for receptions in a season. Then maybe catch 2nd half of Prep-WH or St Joes – Trumbull – should be a good game
Not being from Darien I’m going to ask a stupid question. How does a town like Darien, which is certainly not poor NOT have lights on its field. I mean, lights are so twentieth century, maybe even nineteenth ! Is there some kind of local political stalemate in the town that prevents such a proposal from being financed or put through ? Is there a secret cabal of local anti-lights citizens who squelch such an idea when brought forth ? Is it deemed too great a financial investment for the town coffers to handle ? Hell, in Darien I’d bet that private donations alone could cover a significant amount of the cost to install lights ( or to build a bigger facility for that matter ). So why are there no lights ? It just seems…weird.
It’s political. The neighbors to the field complain about noise, light pollution, you name it, but I believe they should be getting lights next year.
Yes, the neighbors have been a not-so-secret cabal against the lights. Zoning approval for lights has finally been won, but the cost hasn’t been funded (or at least not fully) by the Town or Board of Ed. Darien Athletic Foundation is funding raising now, lights will be a reality in near future.
Same group also raising funds for improved seating on visitors side of football field.
Unfortunately, when the new school was built a few years back, the stadium complex was a complete after-thought.
Because of the weather and the playoffs starting Tuesday all games should be played weds nigh much heathlier for the kids
Is it true this is the last meeting between Derby and Shelton on thanksgiving ?
