Here are your 2016 High School Football Playoff Divisions, which were published on CIAC Monday, June 27.
Unlike last year, where we saw Darien divorced from New Canaan and brought up to Class LL (which the Blue Wave subsequently won), there are few notable changes in this year’s playoff classes.
Sixteen teams have changed divisions for the upcoming season.
A few of usual, on-the-bubble programs like Hillhouse, New London , Hartford Public and Ledyard were all dropped in class.
Hartford Public dropped back to Class L from LL; Hillhouse and New London both dropped from Class L to M. Ledyard dropped from Class M to Class S, where it last competed in 2011.
Other significant drops of note are Crosby (to Class L), Avon and Branford (to Class M), and Rockville (to Class S).
Enfield, which has merged with Fermi to create a united program, has been bumped all the way from Class S to Class LL.
Class LL saw the least change. It will still operate with 35 schools after losing two and gaining two.
Class L and M saw the most change. Class M lost six schools (including Fermi), but picked up seven and will operate with 37 this year (up from 36). Class L lost six schools (five were demoted to M) and picked up five, giving it 34 for this year (down from 35).
Class S lost three schools to promotion (including Enfield) and gained two from Class M, giving it 36 schools.
