It was a complicated path to get there, but as was foreseen (and as some of us maybe secretly hoped), we got a little novelty at the back end of the FCIAC boys hockey tournament.
Fairfield’s 7-2 win over Wilton on Thursday night left the Mustangs tied for fifth with Greenwich at 6-4-1 in conference play. The teams played a 5-5 tie on Jan. 9 at the Wonderland of Ice. In league play, they each beat the same six teams below them, and they each lost to the same four teams above them. (Yes, Greenwich beat Darien in the Winter Classic on Dec. 29, but that wasn’t their league game; Monday’s 4-2 Blue Wave win was the one that counted.)
To determine which team was fifth and which was sixth for the FCIAC tournament, it came down to a coin flip. FCIAC commissioner Dave Schulz performed it Thursday night in the Wonderland lobby.

Tails sent Fairfield to Westhill/Stamford for Saturday night’s quarterfinals. Greenwich will visit New Canaan. You might call them chance meetings. (OK, sorry.)
It’ll make three games in three nights for the Mustangs, who complete their regular season Friday night at North Haven. Greenwich has been done since Monday.
