Darien’s Katie Elders shot wide left on a penalty stroke with 1:15 to go in the second overtime to keep the game scoreless as the Blue Wave and Staples ended up co-champions in the CIAC Class L field hockey championship at Wethersfield high.
Darien goalie Kalli Coughlin had two saves and Staples goalie Bridget Mulloy had 7 saves to preserve the 0-0 tie.
“I’m proud of our girls getting to where we are today,” Darien coach Mo Minicus said. “This was a great game that came down to our breakaways and them stopping our breakaways. Katie worked hard to get herself in position to have that penalty stroke opportunity. Katie and all our girls played their hearts out.”
Staples (18-1-3) wins its first state title and Darien (17-2-3) wins its nine state title (four Class M, five Class L).
“This was a tough game played by two tough teams,” Staples coach Ian Tapsall said. “I think a tie and being co-champs is the best result.”
Mulloy made two game-saving kick saves off Elders shots with 1:15 to go in the first overtime. Elders shot, the rebound save came back to Elders for another shot that Mulloy saved.
“I had so much adrenalin, I was pumped up all game,” Mulloy said. “Those two kick saves were a combination of skill and luck. On the penalty stroke, the ball just went wide left, I didn’t touch it. This is our first championship and it feels great to contribute to it.”
