HARTFORD — Jay Skorulski’s goal at 5:05 into the third overtime lifted 11th-seeded Tri-Town to a 3-2 upset victory over No. 3 Sheehan in the Division III hockey tournament quarterfinals Thursday night at Trinity College.
Alex Bliesner made 58 saves for Tri-Town (9-11-1), which advances to the state semifinals Tuesday, March 18 at Ingalls Rink (7:30 p.m.). Tri-Town will play Newtown, which defeated Hall/Southington 4-1 in the other quarterfinal to reach its first state semifinal.
Carly Femniak made 48 saves for Sheehan, which ended its season 15-7-1.
It was the first three-overtime state tournament game since Bolton/Coventry/Lyman Memorial defeated St. Bernard/Old Lyme/Bacon Academy 3-2 in the 2007 Division III quarterfinals.
The game took just over 3 1/2 hours to play, beginning at 7:30 and ending 11:06 p.m.
Tri-Town was ahead 2-0 after two periods. Sheehan’s Mike Cerrotti and Sal Gozzo tied the game with goals within three minutes of each other early in the third.
The game went through two more overtimes, including 4-on-4 for the second and third overtimes, before Skorulski ended it for Tri-Town.
