David Roach has resigned as the Pomperaug head coach, according to a source close to the team.
Roach, a longtime assistant coach who took over the program in 2011 after Chuck Drury left to coach with his son, Mike, at Southington, resigned Thursday after a 4-7 season, the source said.
Pomperaug was 8-2 in his Roach’s first season and were in position to reach the Class LL playoffs. But the team lost out to Glastonbury on a coin-flip tiebreaker. The Panthers didn’t crack .500 in the next two seasons. They finished 4-6 a year ago.
In 2013, the team began 1-3. A 35-32 comeback victory over Masuk revived the team’s hopes. But Pomperaug followed with consecutive losses to Woodland and Barlow and was 2-2 the rest of the way, including a second-consecutive Thanksgiving week loss to Oxford.
Roach has not returned a phone call seeking comment Friday night.
