Thursday morning Darien’s Alex Ostberg capped off an amazing junior cross country campaign as he was awarded the Gatorade XC Runner of the Year for Connecticut.
Ostberg led Darien to a Class L team title in October and and a second place finish at the State Open. Individually, Ostberg had a terrific season on the trails. He got stronger as the season progressed.
He finished second at the FCIAC Championships, won the Class L title (15:34), was third at the State Open and second at the New England Championships. He ran at the Foot Locker Northeast Regionals in Van Cortlandt Park in N.Y. and took an impressive third place (15:22.5).
He finished his season in style at the Foot Locker Nationals in December in San Diego, Calif. He clocked 15:31 to finish in 11th place and earn All-American.
“This was the first year that Alex was actually healthy for championship season,” said Darien coach Tyson Kaczmarek in a press release from Gatorade. He’s one of the most dedicated and hard working athletes I have ever coached. He does all the extra things a runner can do to be their best.”
