The Danbury wrestling team schedules the best competition it can in order to be prepared for the postseason. Even if that includes a three-plus-hour bus ride to Bennington, Vermont.
The trip was a productive one for the Hatters, who dominated in a 49-22 win over rival Mount Anthony (VT) on Monday afternoon. Danbury won nine matches (including a forfeit) against the school that finished second at last season’s New England championships.
“It was a good win,” said Hatters coach Ricky Shook on Tuesday. “We haven’t beat them in a while up. They had a good crowd, good atmosphere. It was a good match for us.”
The schools have participated in an annual showdown for 19 years, one that serves as a preview for possible matchups at the season-ending New England championships.
Danbury jumped out to a 28-0 lead behind pins from most of its lower classes. Kai O’Dell (106), Kevin Pina (113) and Tyler Johnson (120) got the visitors out to a perfect start. Tyrell Jones scored a pin at 160 to seal the match for the Hatters.
“From the beginning of the year until now is a big difference,” Shook said of Jones. “He’s getting better every week; he’s someone who we’re going to count on in the postseason so hopefully it works out.”
After struggling in the middle weights, Danbury got wins from D.J. Donovan and Jordan Agosto (285) to secure an emphatic win. Up next for the Hatters is another challenging matchup, this time in New Hampshire as Timberlane hosts Danbury, Trumbull and Nashoba (Mass.).
“We still have work to do; we have Timberlane this weekend and that’s the other New England power,” Shook said. “There are four or five of us in New England that are good all the time and Timberlane is the next one.”
