Capital Prep won its eighth-consecutive Constitution State Conference title, crushing Bullard Havens, 102-36, Thursday night at Kaynor Tech in Waterbury.
Kiah Gillespie, the reigning Gatorade State Player of the Year, scored 35 points and had 19 rebounds. Desiree Elmore scored 31 points and had 25 rebounds. Angelique Rodriguez scored 17 points, including nine 3-pointers.
“This one meant the most to me because this is my senior year, ” Gillespie, a Maryland commit, told the Waterbury Republican-American. “It’s probably the last time I’m going to hold this trophy, so I’m kind of guarding it with my life.”
Capital Prep, which is seeded No. 4 in the upcoming Class L girls basketball tournament, is the No. 1-ranked team in the GameTimeCT / New Haven Register Girls Basketball Poll. The Trailblazers are also ranked No. 20 in the latest USA Today Girls Basketball Super 25.
Capital Prep held Bullard-Havens to just 2 points in the second quarter and led 57-16 at halftime.
Bullard Havens fell to 18-5. Jermia Dumas scored 11 points and Destiny Santiago 10 for the Tigers.
