WELCOME to the first edition of ‘Courtside with Joe Morelli,’ our weekly podcast covering boys basketball in Connecticut.
Morelli has been the New Haven Register’s boys basketball beat writer for over 15 seasons and also runs the Boys Basketball Top 10 Poll.
With the Top 10 unveiled this week, we tip off the podcast with a quick look at who’s got what and some general thoughts before diving into an interview with Hillhouse coach Renard Sutton.
Sutton discussed his team’s prospects this season (Hillhouse just missed a spot in the Top 10, although even Sutton says he doesn’t acknowledge anything past No. 10, anyway), his team’s opening game vs. East Catholic in the GHPA Invitational at Trinity College on Saturday, and how he prefers to challenge his team by playing the best schedule possible and can’t fathom why others wouldn’t.
“If you want to proclaim to be the best, you would have to play who’s expected or projected to be the best,” he said. “…The reason for that is to be ready for state competition.”
