WELCOME BACK to another thrilling episode of Courtside with Joe Morelli, your weekly spot for Connecticut high school boys basketball talk with GameTimeCT’s longtime boys basketball beat writer, the eponymous Joe Morelli, and GTCT producer Sean Patrick Bowley.
Joining Joe and Sean this week is local sports legend and current Southern Connecticut State men’s basketball coach Scott Burrell, a former star at Hamden and at UConn before embarking on a long career in the NBA and overseas.
Burrell, who became SCSU coach in 2015, recently had his No. 24 jersey added to the Gampel Pavilion rafters as one of the Huskies of Honor.
He talks about this year’s Owls and gives his take on how the game and the recruiting process has changed since he was a three-sport star at Hamden back in the late 1980s.
Burrell also delves into other topics, including his relationship with Jim Calhoun, his time at UConn and what it was like to play and practice alongside Michael Jordan during the Chicago Bulls’ NBA Championship team in 1998.
And, since everybody was in a chatty mood, we also talked a little NFL playoffs.
