Happy New Year and welcome back to another edition of COURTSIDE with Joe Morelli, your weekly dose of Connecticut boys basketball commentary with GameTimeCT’s hoops maven, Joe Morelli.
Joining Joe on this week’s episode is announcer and fellow podcaster Keith O’Brien, aka The Sports Doctor, who covers the ECC for GameDay Connecticut Sports and the Day of New London for their weekly live streams.
The Doc gives us his take on some of the big names and good teams in the ECC this year, starting off with East Lyme and star senior Dev Ostrowski. He also weighs in on the pros and cons of the ECC’s recently-announced decision to play its basketball championships at Mohegan Sun, following last year’s game which left scores of fans locked outside Waterford’s Francis X. Sweeney Fieldhouse.
While O’Brien acknowledges the interest is there, he said he has mixed feelings about the move.
“The Mohegan Sun is top-notch,” O’Brien says, “But if you ask the kids, Joe, they’ll tell you they’ll play this game in the back yard, we don’t care. And how many times have we seen high school baseball teams play at Dodd (Stadium) or play at Dunkin’ Donuts Field, and when you take a thousand fans and put them in the stands, there’s no atmosphere, there’s no juice, there’s no electricity.
“I just don’t want the ambiance and the atmosphere ruined by playing in a big arena.”
