TORRINGTON >> Torrington Sports Palace hitters pounded the NWCT Orioles into a 17-2 submission in a five-inning mercy-rule-shortened Connie Mack game at Torrington’s Fuessenich Park Monday evening.
“In four games (3-1), this is the first time we’ve really hit,” said Torrington Coach Bill Heintz.
Ten Torrington hits were multiplied by knockout blows.
Kobe Covington, a 320-pound state weight-lifting champion headed for Western Connecticut’s football line in the fall, came up to bat with the bases loaded twice.
In the first inning, he smashed a three-run triple, then got waved home on a throwing error.
The second time, a hard single scored two more for a five RBI total.
By the bottom of the fifth, Sports Palace led 16-2, needing just one more run to trigger the league’s mercy rule.
Jimmy Lamana was up first.
“I said, ‘If Jimmy doesn’t put one over the fence, Marcus (Bloom) will,’” said Covington.
Bloom put the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for the game-ender.
Nobody felt cheated.
By the end of the third inning, it was already a very long game.
Three straight walks and an Oriole error set up Covington in the first inning after winning pitcher Josh Rubino scored on a wild pitch.
Leading 5-0 in the bottom of the second, Torrington’s power bloomed with back-to-back doubles from Rubino and Lamana, along with a walk and two more errors.
Down 9-0 in the top of the third, the Orioles put up their two runs on a walk, a double by Sam Hurlbert, a groundout and an RBI single by Austin Pectal.
Then Torrington batters began their final march. Two walks, a hit batter, an error and hits by Owen Spino, Lamana (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 3 runs), Bloom (2-for-3, 3 RBI, 4 runs), Covington (2-for-3) and Riley Shreders (2-for-3) paraded seven runs across the plate, just one short of the one Bloom needed to be the final hero.
“It was my first one for Connie Mack, my second or third at Fuessenich,” said the Torrington High School incoming senior.
