WEST HARTFORD – The Conard High girls track team is off to a strong start and gearing up for the stretch run after a solid performance in its most recent meet.
The Chieftains improved to 3-1 on the season with a 103-47 victory over Southington on Tuesday. Conard was coming off a loss to Simsbury on April 29th but got right back on track against Southington.
“The Southington win was an exciting win for us after losing to Simsbury last week,” Conard coach Tracie Kelly said.
So far this season, captains Olivia Bourquin, Emma Everett, Randa Griffin and Brigid Lucy have been leading the way as an overall young team finds its footing.
“We are a young and growing team with some great seniors leading the way in our four captains,” Kelly said. “The team is also very lucky to have other strong leaders in our senior class as well.”
“Our goals for the rest of the season are to continue to reach new personal bests and continue to race competitively,” Conard coach Tracie Kelly said.
The Chieftains are scheduled to compete in the Greater Hartford Invitational on Saturday and have three more meets to go after that before the championship season begins.
“We are hoping to finish with a winning season and place in both CCCs and states,” Kelly said. “Both our 4×800 and 4×100 relay teams should make some noise at both CCCs and states.”
Conard’s success so far has been equal parts ability and attitude and a positive mental attitude (PMA) has become a rallying cry for the team and a reminder of what it takes to succeed.
“PMA has become a cheer many of our athletes use in support of their teammates and their many accomplishments,” Kelly said. “We have had excellent displays of PMA team wide in which helped many of our girls to qualify for states, CCCs and earn personal bests. As a team we continue to improve and I give credit to these improvements because of the teams motivation, hard work, support and dedication to the sport and their teammates.”
Some of the Chieftains to keep an eye on idown the stretch of the season and in the championship meets include; Shea Williams, Lizzy Lagoy, Randa Griffin, Alana Waggoner, Olivia Bourquin, Margaret Byrne, Elena Santos, Carlie Musto, Alix Royce and Brigid Lucey.
“We are very excited about this season and can’t wait to see where it leads,” Kelly said.”
