NEWTOWN >> Jared Pearson’s 13-yard scoring run capped a wild, fourth-quarter comeback and lifted Newtown to a 21-20 victory over No. 5 Glastonbury in the Class LL quarterfinals at Blue and Gold Stadium.
The victory, sealed by Sam Czel’s interception at midfield, was Newtown’s first state tournament victory since beating Hall in 2011. Newtown, the No. 4 seed, advances to face No. 1-seeded Shelton down the road in the LL semifinals at Finn Stadium.
Keyion Dixon returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown and threw an 83-yard touchdown strike to Jake Madnick in the second quarter. Madnick’s recovery of a Glastonbury fumble in the third quarter gave the Tomahawks a 20-6 lead after three quarters. But the missed extra point wound up costing Glastonbury.
Ben Mason got Newtown within 20-14 to start the fourth quarter and the Hawks (10-1) got the ball back at their own 30 with 5:21 remaining. Pearson moved the Hawks into position and, after a fourth-down conversion run by Mason, scored with 2:34 remaining. Ryan Kost’s kick won it for Newtown.
