It’s not quite a #TweetYourBuzzerBeaters, but in a tournament season that’s been devoid of them, this is close enough.
Naugatuck bested Harding in what was close game throughout. It was won amid bedlam with six seconds left on a layup by Jarron Chapman with six seconds remaining.
It was more than enough time for Harding to rush back up the floor to attempt a game-winning shot of its own.
And, wow, the Presidents got an incredible, uncontested look directly beneath the basket. But Taisun Phommachanh, who doubles as Harding’s star quarterback in the spring, saw his shot roll off the rim as the buzzer sounded.
Naugatuck, the No. 7 seed, won 61-60 and advances to play No. 10 Wilton at home in the second round. Harding’s return to basketball glory will have to wait another season.
