Old Saybrook/Westbrook forfeits win over Stafford/East Windsor

Sean Patrick Bowley | November 27, 2013

The CIAC has declared Old Saybrook/Westbrook’s victory over Stafford/East Windsor on Nov. 22 a forfeit due to the use of an ineligible player.

As a result, Coginchaug lost 10 playoff points and can now only max out at 1160 (105.45). It does not affect its qualifying scenario (Coginchaug still needs to win to get in). Read more on the Class S playoff scenarios.

Here’s the release from CIAC on the forfeit:

CHESHIRE, Conn. – Due to use of ineligible player, Old Saybrook/Westbrook has forfeited its November 22nd varsity football victory over Stafford/East Windsor.

The original result of the contest was a 41-22 victory for Old Saybrook/Westbrook, but the winning team used a player that was required to sit out one game due to a disqualification. With the CIAC football playoff standings being based on a point system, the change in result could impact playoff seeding and qualification as the regular season concludes on Thursday, November 28. Forfeit wins and losses are treated the same as any other win or loss in the point system.

“CIAC rules require that any use of an ineligible player triggers a forfeit for the offending team,” explained CIAC Associate Executive Director Paul Hoey. “Both teams involved in the game have been notified of the situation, and with this result potentially impacting the playoff status of other teams due to the football points system, it was important to resolve the issue quickly.”
