WETHERSFIELD—Defense has been one of the strengths for the Immaculate field hockey team this season, and it certainly paid off for the Mustangs in the CIAC Class S championship game with Granby on Sunday.
The Mustangs limited the Bears to one shot on goal, Molly Coyle scored twice and Madison Halas scored the game’s first goal off a penalty stroke to lead No. 3 Immaculate to a 3-0 win over No. 1 Granby for the program’s first field hockey state title.
“Our girls came out here and they wanted to this more than anything,” Immaculate coach Shannon Horosky said. “This title has been four years in the making, but actuall, the last nine years we’ve been working toward this day. I’m so happy for our girls, they worked their butts off for this.
“That goal on the penalty stroke got us going but Molly came through too. She does a great job of getting rebounds and tipping it in and that’s what she did today.”

Immaculate (21-1-0-1) dominated the ball possession and pressure in the first half and had three penalty corners to none for Granby. But it would be a penalty stroke that would allow the Mustangs to score the game’s first goal.
The Mustangs were awarded a penalty stroke when the ball bounced off the foot of a defender inside the Granby goal. Halas took the penalty stroke and one-timed a shot inside the left corner to give Immaculate a 1-0 lead with 16:32 to go in the half.
Immaculate continued to pressure the Bears in their zone. There was a scramble in front of goalie Nina DeGagne. A shot was taken and DeGagne made the save. But Coyle was there for the rebound and gave the Mustangs a 2-0 lead with 17:42 to go in the game. Coyle added another goal with 7:10 to go for the final.
“I am so happy, winning this championship is so huge for our team and our program,” Coyle said. “It shows what we are made of as a team. We worked so hard for this, it was a real team effort.”
Immaculate goalie Lauren Oskam had one save and DeGagne had seven.
