Cheshire had beaten every single team in the Southern Connecticut Conference except one coming into this season.
On Friday, the Rams finally beat that team. Cheshire knocked off Hillhouse, previously ranked 10th in the Register/GameTimeCT poll, 51-44 at home.
“It’s just one example of SCC basketball. Every night you face a challenging situation,” Cheshire coach Dan Lee said. “We’ve been close a few times. This is big for the kids.”
It is the first time Cheshire has ever beaten Hillhouse, according to research done by Greg Lederer from the Cheshire Herald. The two programs rarely faced each other before the SCC was formed a quarter-century ago.
Cheshire held Hillhouse scoreless in the first quarter, leeading 12-0. That lead went up to 22-0 before the Academics got on the scoreboard.
Hillhouse did make a run, but couldn’t come all the way back.
“That’s a credit to them. They are such a well-respected program in state, I think everyone recognizes that,” Lee said. “
The question now is this: is this the mountain top for the season or do the Rams build on it from here?
“Our goal is to focus on the next play,” Lee said. “We say it all the time, whether we are up or down, we will keep going along. Regardless if it was the best play or worst play ever, it’s done. You have to look at the next play.”
