The Casey-O’Brien New Haven County Chapter of the National Football Foundation has canceled this year’s scholar athlete awards dinner scheduled for March 27 at Fantasia in North Haven.
‘This is terrible for us to have to cancel our 60th awards dinner but we have no choice,” chapter president Bill O’Brien said in a statement. “It’s all because of the Coronavirus.”
The foundation was scheduled to recognize 28 scholar athletes who have excelled in the classroom and on the field. Others scheduled to be honored included 50-year coaches George DeLeone and Chris Palmer, Abbott and Scott Burrell, Judge Arthur Hadden and Cheshire coach Don Drust.
Sheehan High School was scheduled to receive a plaque for winning the Class S state championship. The foundation was founded in 1960 and has honored 1257 scholar athletes over the years.
