Coming to a field near you: The mega-matchups of the SCC/FCIAC Challenge (Graphic by Sean Patrick Bowley)
Because spring practices are underway, and the 2014 season is just a scant few months away, and — of course — we can never get enough football around here, the Southern Connecticut Conference has released the official schedule for Week 1 of the wildly popular SCC/FCIAC Challenge.
Consider your appetite whet.
The FCIAC won last year’s Week 1 challenge, 9-8. Nasty weather forced many of the games to be played over four days.
Year II’s matchups remains the same except the sites are reversed and dates/times have been shuffled a bit. So clear your September schedules accordingly.
Taking a quick glance at the schedule, it looks like, ONCE GAIN we will be forced to choose between Xavier/Staples, New Canaan/Hand and Greenwich/West Haven. It is apparently impossible to get these games spaced out.
Foof.
Anyway… moving on.
For completion’s sake, non-SCC/FCIAC challenge matchups are also included. If you remember, Amity had already scheduled a two-year series with Seymour and, as a result, Branford, Norwalk and Westhill opted out. Branford plays Woodland (NVL) and Norwalk plays Westhill.
(Aside: While most of the leagues have finalized their schedules, the CIAC will release the official 2014 schedules sometime within the next week. So be prepared.)

Wow! Cant believe football is already being talked about in June.. New Canaan vs Hand should be a great game this year! Hand is experienced in just about every position and NC returns their top receiver and running back as well as a solid defense. I see that as the top game out of the X vs Staples and WH vs Greenwhich games. Also, thank you SPB you do a great job covering football over the state and im sure I speak for a lot of people when I say your work is really appreciated.. Thank You
SurfClub will be the place to be for HS football 7pm, 9/12.
Every school is going to do what’s best for their community. In Madison, it’s Friday night lights baby!. Shut down the town, everyone will be at the Surf Club to see if the Tigers have the goods to redeem themselves from that lopsided loss to the Rams.
Football schedules are posted on CIAC website:
http://content.ciacsports.com/vs1415/boys-football.html
According to the CIAC schedule, the McMahon v Cross game is Thursday, 9/11 at 4pm and the Darien v Hillhouse game is Friday, 9/12 at Cross at 4pm
Hand vs. New Canaan?..It doesn’t get better than this The surf club will be rocking. Hope they have a better seating plan for the visiting teams this year. Even with all the improvements to the Surf club the visiting section was too far from the action and the seating was very limited. Contrary to many reports New Canaan will not be down this year just not as good as last years team. Hand returns practically everyone from last years team that beat a great Prep team. This game has overtime written all over it.
