Brunswick finishes first at FAA Swimming Championships for third time in four seasons, Hopkins places second

Winning the first four events and seven of 11 overall, the Brunswick School swimming team added another FAA championship trophy to its collection.

The Bruins placed first in the team standings for the third time in four years at the FAA Championships on Saturday at Hopkins School in New Haven.

Brunswick totaled a first-place team score of 161 points. Hopkins was the runner-up (151), followed by Hamden Hall (101) in the championship meet, which included four teams.

In the first event of the meet, Brunswick’s Lucas Hodgson, Marcus Hodgson, Patrick Mullen and Alexander Hazlett combined for a winning time of 1:37.32 in the 200-yard medley relay. Hopkins placed second in 1:42.72 and Hamden Hall took third (1:51.01).

Max Meissner claimed the first-place medal in the 200-yard freestyle for Brunswick, posting a time of 1:43.12. Deniz Tek of Hopkins finished second with a time of 1:49.60 and Brunswick’s Luke Apostolides placed third in 1:49.70.

The 200-yard individual medley saw Mullen touch the wall first in 1:58.96. Steve Broun from Hopkins was second (2:04.12), followed by Michael Ferneini (Hamden Hall, 2:06.22).

Hazlett showed his speed in the 50 freestyle, giving the Bruins a winning performance with a time of 21.72 seconds. Close behind him were Duncan Farqharson of Hamden Hall (22.22), Hopkins’ Julius Herzog (22.35) and Brunswick’s Michael O’Malley (22.92).

Alex Schott gave the Hilltoppers a first-place finish in the 1-meter diving event, earning 276.05 points. In the 100 butterfly, Lucas Hodgson took top honors for the Bruins, clocking in at 52.68. Mullen was a close second (52.93), followed by William Zhu from Hopkins (54.34).

The FAA 100-yard freestyle title went to Hopkins’ Ethan Woolbert, who registered a time of 47.84. His teammate, Herzog, was second in 48.98. O’Malley of Brunswick took third in 49.68.

Apostolides showed his stamina in winning the 500 freestyle for the Bruins (4:52.45). Tek took second in 4:58.88, while Brunswick’s Felipe Leao was third (5:07.73).

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Marcus Hodgson, Mullen, O’Malley and Meissner combined for a first-place effort of 1:27.81. Hopkins was the runner-up in the event (1:32.42).

In the 100 backstroke, Farqharson from Hamden Hall was the champion in 53.37. Peter Michalik gave the Bruins a second-place finish (57.28) and Woolbert of Hopkins was third (59.36).

In the final individual event of the championship meet, Woolbert won the 100 breaststroke for Hopkins with a time of 57.89. Meissner was the runner-up (57.37), followed by Marcus Hodgson (1:02.06).

Hopkins won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:23.89. Up next for Brunswick is the NEPSAC Division I Championships at Hotchkiss School. The NEPSAC Division I Championships are scheduled to take place Saturday and Sunday.
