Branford’s Marzio Mastroianni placed third in the mile at the Connecticut Distance Festival Thursday. Marzio was the top Connecticut finisher in the event, which drew top distance runners from New York and New England to Xavier High School.
Marzio, a senior, finished in 4:19.22. The event was won by senior Matt Rizzo of Bronxville, NY, who finished in 4:16.23. Senior Alex Rizzo of Bronxvlle, NY was second in 4:17.53.
Xavier senior William Curren placed seventh (4:21.37) and Middletown senior Matt Lecky was eighth (4:25.79.). Suffield junior Nick Sinofsky was 10th in 4:26.39.
Manchester junior Kate Hedlund won the girls mile in 10.64. Immaculate senior Taylor Mascetta was second in 5:11.56, followed by Rocky Hill junior Elizabeth Stockman (5:12.89), Glastonbury senior Grace Sparrow (5:16.82), Southington senior Kate Kemnitz (5:17.01), Glastonbury senior Angela Braga (5:17.18), Wolcott junior Kathryn Rodrigues Rodrigues (5:23.20), Newtown freshman Ally McCarthy (5:35.19), Southington sophomore Lauren Verrilli (5:37.78) and Immaculate sophomore Molly Coyle (5:38.47).
In the boys 5,000 meters, Xavier junior Robbie Cozean won in 14:40.40, followed by Hall senior Trey Cormier (14:42.90) and Manchester freshman Aidan Puffer (14:47.66). East Lyme senior Sam Whittaker was fourth (15:16.22) and Xavier senior Dillon Selfors fifth (15:29.39).
Avon junior Rhiannon Richmond won the girls 5K in 17:55.61, followed by New Fairfield senior Kayla Cohen (18:29.06), and Hale Ray senior Emily Sienna (18:35.96). New Fairfield junior Hazel Hudson was fifth (18:57.37).
