Branford High varsity athletic contests scheduled through Oct. 1 either have been or will be moved due to delays in completion of the school’s athletic complex.
In a letter sent by the school to parents, the school indicated the track that goes around the turf field is yet to be finished. “The track portion of the project has presented challenges associated with the pavement underneath the original track. Adjustments have also been made to the original plan with both end zones now being covered in turf and new curbing being installed along the inside perimeter of the track,” the letter states.
Not only do all the varsity games need to be moved, but also practices, said Branford co-athletic director Jake Palluzzi, who also thanked the town’s recreation department and Joe Carbone, the head of building and grounds for the town, for helping move the large number of games and practices.
“Everybody has been so cooperative. Our coaches have been good about understanding the process and make the best of what we have,” Palluzzi said. “Everybody from our league (the Southern Connecticut Conference) have been very receptive (in helping move games). I hope everyone will have patience and understanding that we are going to get something much more beneficial for our town.”
The first three boys soccer home games have already been moved to Flax Mill field in Branford while the Sept. 26 contest against Hand has yet to be moved. The girls soccer team has a week’s worth of games – Sept. 19 against Hamden, Sept. 21 against Guilford and Sept. 23 against West Haven – plus Sept. 29 against East Haven that either have to be flip-flopped to away games or moved to Flax Mill.
The Sept. 23 football game against Shelton is “moving to another venue, most likely Guilford,” Palluzzi said. The Sept. 30 football home game against East Lyme is still up in the air.
Palluzzi said the field hockey games Sept. 13 against Cheshire, Sept. 17 against Hand and Sept. 27 against Amity all could be moved to its former field, the grass field on the other side of the school.
