No. 1 singles player Jason Seidman reached the final and doubles team Gabriel Betancur advanced Nicholas Sabatelli to the semifinals. Both helped Amity clinch the Class LL state championship on Wednesday, the school’s first state title since 2004.
In fact, no team from any conference other than the FCIAC has won the LL title since the Spartans last won it. And there is still one more day of play left on Thursday.
Seidman will face Xavier’s Rich Ciamarra in the singles final Thursday at Conard High in West Hartford, beginning at approximately 3:30 p.m.. This is a rematch of last year’s LL semifinal, won by Ciamarra. Seidman won the rematch last month and has dropped just one set all season – to Ciammara.
Seidman has lost just three games in five matches in this tournament.
Betancur and Sabatelli, the fifth seed, fell to top-seeded Tal Nizan and Patrick Sheehan-Delaney from Ridgefield 6-0 4-6 6-3 in the semifinals.
“This team will forever be remembered in Amity tennis lore,” Amity coach Chris Raffone said. “For my seniors especially, I couldn’t be happier to see them finish out their high school careers with an undefeated season, SCC championship and Class LL state championship.”
