The semifinal-round of the Class LL, L, M and S boys tournaments are scheduled to be held on Thursday, with the finals taking place on Friday. Here’s a look at what’s transpired in each Class.
Top-seeded Andrew Ilie of Trumbull advanced to the semifinals of the singles bracket with a 6-1, 6-0 win over 10th-seeded Caleb Fockens from Greenwich in Wednesday’s quarterfinals at Amity. Ilie, the defending Class LL champion, posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Andrew Kudla of Southington in the first round, then defeated Jack Davis of Fairfield Warde in the second round, 6-1, 6-0. He was a 7-5, 6-1 winner against 16th-seeded Christopher Hilton from Fairfield Prep in the Round of 16, before beating Fockens on Wednesday.
Ilie will play fifth-seeded Brett Gloria of Amity. Gloria began the tournament by posting a 6-1, 6-0 win over Louis Guzzi (Fairfield Prep). He then topped Ridgefield’s Seth Prusko in the second round (6-2, 6-3) and registered a 6-1, 6-3 over Staples’ Jack Tooker in the third round. The quarterfinals saw Gloria notch a 6-2, 6-1 win against No. 15 Taishi Hosokawa of Norwalk.
Third-seeded Eric Stein from Staples moved on to the singles semifinals by getting past Greenwich’s Justin Speaker 6-3, 6-2 in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. Stein will play the winner of the quarterfinal-round match between No. 7 Jordan Soifer of Westhill and No. 2 Prem Dave from Norwalk. That match will be held on Thursday.
Speaker, seeded sixth, won his opening-round match against Southington’s Kade Huang-Savino, 6-0, 6-0, then came back to beat Fairfield Warde’s Emilio Montejo in the second round, 4-6, 6-0, 10-7 in the second round. In the third round, he defeated No. 12 Ramiro Davila Salgado from Ridgefield, 6-3, 6-1. Fockens advanced to the quarterfinals with victories against Yonah Goldberg of Hall (6-2, 6-0), Daniel Monyak of Conard (6-0, 6-0), and Ridgefield’s Brian Song (6-2, 4-6, 10-7). Hosokawa won his match against Neev Suryawanshi from Westhill, 6-3, 6-0 in the first round and took a 6-3, 6-2 decision from Marek Kryzanski (Southington) in the second round. In the Round of 16, he was victorious against fourth-seeded Subramani Utsav.
The singles semifinals are scheduled to be held on Thursday at Wesleyan University at 3:30 p.m.
In the Class LL doubles bracket, top-seeded Tighe Brunetti and Robert Daus from Staples will play fourth-seeded Nicholas Liu and Hayden Witmer from Greenwich in Wednesday’s semifinals. Brunetti/Daus were 6-4, 6-4 winners over eighth-seeded Oliver Kleinberg/David Poudrier from Fairfield Ludlowe in the quarterfinals. In the Round of 16, the Staples duo beat Joseph Campos/Emmett O’Malley from Ridgefield, 6-0, 6-3. After receiving a first-round bye, Brunetti/Daus eliminated Warde’s Sam Greenberg/RJ Welch in the second round, 6-1, 6-1.
Liu and Witmer, who have been a doubles team the majority of the season for the Cardinals, advanced to the semifinals by tallying a 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5) triumph against Yuuki Hosokawa/JuQuaiill Banks from Norwalk in the quarterfinals. The Greenwich duo defeated Elliott Hokunson/Kyle McDonald from Glastonbury in the third round, 6-2, 6-2.
Thursday’s other Class LL doubles semifinal will feature third-seeded Tyler Pomerance and Rohan Suryanwanshi from Westhill against Staples’ Jason Katz and Adam Greenlee. Pomerance/Suryawanshi were 6-2, 6-4 winners against Jake Greenwald and Bradley Sheppard from Staples in the quarterfinals. In the third round, Pomerance/Suryawanshi came back to beat Greenwich’s Stefan Brovig and James Cosby, 2-6, 6-2, 10-7.
Katz/Greenlee defeated Jason Katz and Tadd Long from Ridgefield in the quarterfinal-round (7-6 (7), 6-3, after topping second-seeded Christopher Bullers and Maxwell Dragan from Amity in the third round, 6-1, 6-2.
In the team standings, Greenwich and Staples are tied with 21 points, followed by Ridgefield (16) and Amity (12).
Wilton’s Nicholas Condos, seeded first, advanced to the singles semifinals, where he will go up against fifth-seeded Jason Lee on Thursday at Wesleyan University. Condos made it to the semifinals by defeating ninth-seeded Ryan Patrick from Darien, 6-1, 6-4 in Wednesday’s quarterfinals. Lee moved on with a tough 7-6 (5), 0-6, 10-4 victory against fourth-seeded Gianni Esposito from Guilford in the quarterfinals.
Also in the singles semifinals, Michael Karr of Darien, who was also given the No. 1 seed, will play third-seeded Josh Israel from Daniel Hand. Karr was victorious against 10th-seeded Matthew Fuffo from Xavier in the quarterfinal-round. Israel, a semifinalist last season, eliminated 12th-seeded Matthew Brand from New Canaan, 6-2, 6-2.
In Class L doubles competition, New Canaan’s top-seeded team of Luke Crowley/Jack Moore will test their skills in the semifinals against fourth-seeded Darby Rogers/Reilly Vejar from Daniel Hand. Crowley/Moore won their quarterfinal-round match on Wednesday against eighth-seeded Tyler Cramer/Ian Wise from Darien, 6-3, 6-1. Rogers and Vejar, meanwhile, got past the sixth-seeded Wilton tandem of Ian Kolupaev/Rahul Vallabhajosula 6-3, 6-3.
The doubles semifinals will also feature second-seeded Christopher Calderwood and Romano DeCaprio from Darien against No. 13 Sergei Doroshin/Andrew Kelley also of Darien in a Blue Wave special. Calderwood/DeCaprio were 6-1, 6-2 winners against Pierson Elliott/Neel Mirani from Farmington in the quarterfinal-round. Doroshin/Kelley edged fifth-seeded Jack McCarthy/ Alessandro Sulpizi from New Canaan in a hard-fought quarterfinal-round matchup, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 10-8.
The team standings has New Canaan with 24 points and Darien right behind them with 23 points. Daniel Hand has 20 team points.
No. 1-seeded Jonathan Trevethan from Berlin advanced to the singles semifinals by beating No. 8 Yefim Gorodnitskiy of Avon, 7-5, 6-0 in Wednesday’s quarterfinals at Wesleyan
. Trevethan was a 6-0, 6-0 winner against No. 16 Cameron Weller of Weston in the third round and has won each of his matches in straight sets in the tournament so far.
He will play fourth-seeded Grady Tarzian of Weston in Thursday’s semifinals at Wesleyan University. Tarzian advanced with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against fifth-seeded Eric Raut of Joel Barlow in the quarterfinals. Tarzian has also won his first four matches in the tournament in straight sets, including a 6-1, 6-0 decision against No. 13 Dylan Karp in the third round.
Also in the Class M singles semifinals, third-seeded Brennan Nick from Tolland will face No. 2 Arjun Chandra-Mohanty from Avon. Nick topped sixth-seeded Jared Goldstein (Brookfield) in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-2, after eliminating No. 14 Jake Bernard in the third round, 6-1, 6-1. Chandra-Mohanty was a 6-3, 6-2 winner against Weston’s Nicholas Moy in the quarterfinals. He defeated Harry Honig (Lewis Mills) in the third round, 6-4, 7-5 and has taken each match in straight sets.
In the Class M doubles bracket, the top-seeded duo of Alex Klein/Adam Ortiz of Joel Barlow made it through to the semifinals by prevailing against Anthony Fontana/Aaron Miller (Weston) 6-2, 6-2. They will play the No. 3-seeded Weston tandem of Adrik Scaramuzza/Harrison Moy. The Weston duo edged sixth-seeded Mahendra Vadlamud/Tej Raman (Avon), 7-5, 7-5, in the quarters.
Avon’s second-seeded duo of John Hogan/Ian Stapleton play No. 4 Jalen Johnson/Bobby Tremont (Joel Barlow) in the semifinals. Johnson and Tremont got past Weston’s Drew Berkin/Brian Nordlinger in the quarterfinals (6-4, 6-2). Hogan/Stapleton beat No. 7 Adarsh Rao Makarla/Aditya Rao Makarla (Bethel) in the quarters, 6-4, 6-3.
In the team standings, Avon and Weston are deadlocked with 24 points, while Joel Barlow is right behind them in second place with 22.
In the singles bracket, Charlie Shanks of Litchfield, the No. 1 seed, moved on to the semifinals by winning his matchup against No. 9 Joe Wilson (Immaculate) in Wednesday’s quarterfinals at Conard by a 6-2, 7-5 score. He plays fourth-seeded Jacob Stiger from Stonington in the semifinals, which will be held at Wesleyan. Stiger beat fifth-seeded Nathan Comment (Westbrook) 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinal-round.
Third-seeded George Danes (Old Lyme) and second-seeded Drew Morris (St. Joseph) will take the court in the other singles semifinal. Danes eliminated Litchfield’s Ryan Garden 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals, while Morris notched a 6-1, 6-2 triumph against No. 10 Miles Chapman (Litchfiield).
Litchfield has the lead in the team standings with 18 points, while Old Lyme is in second place with 11 points.
