MERIDEN >> After an all-out battle with Coventry, Somers’ boys soccer team went through two 15-minute overtime periods to claim a 3-2 win for the Class S Championship.
John Poitras put the Raiders ahead early in the first half.
Coventry’s Streve Voros tied it midway through the second.
In the final 10 minutes of regulation, the teams traded goals one more time. The first came courtesy of Coventry’s Alex Erskine with seven minutes left. Then Somers’ Corey Brown scored with three minutes to go.
Brown, Somers’ single-season scoring record-holder with 39, put the game away five minutes into the first half of overtime on a penalty kick after a Somers take-down in the box.
The win was all the sweeter after Somers shared the championship last year, then lost twice to Coventry in NCCC play this season.
“We did not want to be co-champions again,” Brown said. “We knew what they were going to come out with.”
“We knew exactly what we had to do,” Somers coach Rick Kelley said. “We didn’t play full strength during the season. This time we did.”
Raider goalkeeper Brody Rheault saved a first-half penalty kick.
“I knew exactly where it was going,” Rheault, a sophomore keeper, said.
Coventry finishes the season 17-3. Somers ends 15-5-1.
