Matheus Souza of Conard has been named the 2013 Gatorade Connecticut Boys Soccer Player of the Year.
Souza, a senior forward had 24 goals and 10 assists this past season, leading the Chieftains (13-5-2) to the Class LL state tournament quarterfinals. His efforts earned him Connecticut Junior Soccer Association Male High School Player of the Year honors and selection to the All-American team by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Souza finished his career with 59 goals and 26 assists and will play at UConn next fall.
The Gatorade award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.
