Welcome to the cross country championship season!
The state championships for all classifications will run all day Saturday at Wickham Park in Manchester.
Below are three names from each class to watch. Runners may not have the fastest times or top places, but just some names to keep an eye out for this weekend!
Class M (9:50 a.m. start time)
Bryce Hedman, Ledyard: The senior won the ECC Championships in a time of 16:42. Last fall finished fourth at states.
James Mas, St. Joseph: Finished 12th at FCIAC Championships on Monday in time of 16:16. Placed fifth at states in 2013.
Jordan Dixon, Ellington: Top returner from last year, finishing in third place. Won the NCCC title last week in 16:23.60.
Class MM (10:55 a.m.)
Luke Arsenault, Branford: The senior finished fourth (16:18) in a highly competitive SCC Championship race last week. Placed 11th overall last fall at states.
Ben Siciliano, Guilford: Was sixth at SCC Championships, a smart and focused junior, has the ability to crack the top 10 or better at states.
Ben Ruffing, Barlow: A sophomore, placed fifth at SWC Championships last week (17:09.86). Got experience as a freshman at states last fall.
Class L (noon)
Alex Ostberg, Darien: One of the top runners in the nation, the senior has been a fun one to watch this fall. Set the FCIAC course-record on Monday in 14:47. A favorite to win the crown.
Armstrong Noonan, Darien: Has produced a strong junior season, finished third at the FCIAC Championships in 15:35; placed fifth as a sophomore last fall at state meet.
Spencer Brown, Wilton: The senior captured eighth place last fall (16:36) and was second at the FCIAC Championships.
Class LL (1:35 p.m.)
Ari Klau, Hall: Won the CCC title last week in 15:44.39 and has been running outstanding this fall, claiming the Wickham Invitational title. Last year placed second in Class L.
Gabriel Altopp, Ridgefield: Took fourth (15:42) at FCIAC Championships on Monday, was 11th last fall at LLs. Comes from one of top programs in the state.
Brendan Murray, Cheshire: Just a freshman, Murray will be making his state championships debut on Saturday, but already has an impressive resume. Placed third at Wickham Invite (16:31) and finished second at SCC Championships; will challenge a lot of the top guys.
Class S (2:40 p.m.)
Trevor Chambers, Bolton: Coming off a second place finish at NCCC (16:26.88), senior is one of the top returners, as he finished third last year at states.
Jonathan Dolan, Portland: Was seventh at states last year, finished eighth (16:53.7) last week in a competitive Shoreline Championship race.
Trevor Daigle, Thomaston: Senior had a strong showing at Berkshire League Championships placing fifth. Could contend for one of the top 10 spots at states.
Class SS (3:45 p.m.)
Christian Alberico, Coginchaug: Seeking his first state title, Alberico is a favorite to win. He’s coming off a first-place showing at the Shoreline Championships (15:58.9) and ran well at Wickham Invite earlier in the month.
Ross Golebiewski, Old Lyme: Won the state title last year and helped lead his squad to a team title as well. Finished fourth at Shorelines (16:33.3) last week.
Brian Gendron Morgan: The senior finished third at Shoreline Championships (16:21.9), finished runner-up last year.
