Jim McCarthy has been named the next boys basketball coach at Cheshire Academy
McCarthy, a former collegiate assistant men’s coach at several schools, including both Yale and New Haven, replaces Kevin Kehoe, who resigned after 10 seasons for the ‘Cats. He won one NEPSAC championship and made seven postseason appearances.
“It’s a chance to be a head coach and have my own program,” McCarthy said. “The program is similar to a college program in what you do year-round. I would always go to Cheshire Academy’s open gym and see them play in other tournaments.”
McCarthy, 39, was an assistant for New Haven last year and at Yale for three seasons (2003-06). He also worked at Northeastern (2006-13), Towson (2013-17) and Williams (2001-03). McCarthy played at Hamilton College, graduating in 2001, and grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts.
“I want to be as competitive as we can as soon as we can,” said McCarthy, who will also teach history at the school. “We need to prepare kids for college. That’s the goal of the school and the basketball program should reflect that. I want to prepare them for the academics, basketball, expectations they have being on their own, being part of a year-round program and hopefully each year make improvements. I know the program has had a proud tradition for a long time and I’m excited to hopefully add to that.”
