Ian Kirkpatrick has been named the new boys basketball coach at Foran. The appointment became official Friday.
Kirkpatrick, 34, was an assistant at Staples in the FCIAC the past five seasons. He previously served as an assistant coach at Foran in 2004-05 and in 2010-11 and is currently a physical education teacher at East Shore Middle School in Milford. This is his first head coaching position.
“I waited for the right opportunity,” Kirkpatrick said. “When this job opened, I couldn’t pass it up. There are a bunch of great kids that go to this school.”
Kirkpatrick replaces Tim Swaller, who departed his alma mater after 10 seasons to take the job at Stratford in June. Kirkpatrick coached with Swaller in 2010-11 and current Foran athletic director Anthony Vitelli during the 2004-05 campaign.
“The transition for our players will be a smooth one,” Vitelli said. “Ian is energetic, loves to teach the game of basketball and will be involved in our community. Under Ian’s leadership, our players will develop their skills and he will serve as a great role model to them.”
Kirkpatrick played for Vito Montelli at St. Joseph, graduating in 2000.
“We are going to be ready, day in and day out,” Kirkpatrick said. “Right from day one, I intend to build a program. … There are no days off. We will have to be ready to play and compete on every possession.”
