The 2015-16 boys basketball schedules are out. Plenty of interesting things to discuss as the season is more than two months away.
Sacred Heart, the two-time Class S state champions, move up to Class M this year (the divisions won’t be posted until a later date by CIAC). The Hearts are riding a 32-game winning streak into the season and was No. 1 in the Register/GameTimeCT poll all season long last year.
In addition to its 18-game NVL schedule, the Hearts will face Foothills Christian Academy in California in the HoopHall Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts on Jan. 16 and an opponent to be determined in the Big Apple Classic on Jan. 18 in New York. Mustapha Heron, the Register’s State Player of the Year last season, returns to lead the way. He changed his commitment in the off-season from Pittsburgh to Auburn.
Crosby, which gave Sacred Heart its two toughest games last season, including the NVL tournament final, faces Sacred Heart Jan. 15 (away) and Feb. 9 (home). The Bulldogs also face New London (Dec. 29) and East Hartford (Feb. 3). Nick Augelli, the sport’s active wins leader with 621 victories, will have the court officially dedicated/renamed in is honor on Nov. 9.
Moving from the Brass City to the Elm City, Hillhouse will face Weaver, the reigning Class M champ now playing in Class L, on Dec. 29 at Maloney in a doubleheader with the Crosby-New London game; Bassick Jan. 18 in the Martin Luther King Classic at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport; and Bishop Hendricken (RI) on Jan. 25.
The Academics will match up with city rival Wilbur Cross on Jan. 27 and Feb. 22, featuring two of the best returning players in the state, Joey Kasperzyk (Hillhouse) and Robert Durant (Cross). The Governors will face Bridgeport Central in the MLK Classic in addition to Harding (Feb. 1) and New Britain (Feb. 10).
Hyde’s non-conference schedule outside the Shoreline Conference is Harding (Jan. 11) and Hamden (Jan. 25).
Career, which lost reigning Register Area Player of the Year Tyreek Perkins to Putnam Science Academy in September, will also play in the MLK Classic against Harding and will defend its SWC Tip-Off Tournament in December. Its opener is against Class M finalist Notre Dame-Fairfield with Class L champion Bunnell and host Kaynor Tech in the other game.
Speaking of Notre Dame, the Lancers will face the other Notre Dame, the Green Knights out of West Haven, on Jan. 18 in Fairfield. The Lancers will also return to the Fairfield Holiday Tournament with fellow Fairfield schools Warde, Ludlowe and defending champion Prep.
Among the other notable Christmas tournaments, Trinity Catholic will have St. Joseph, Kolbe Cathedral and Kellenberg Memorial (NY) in a new tournament. Wethersfield replaces East Hartford in Xavier’s Artie Kohs Classic, which brings back Ledyard and Glastonbury.
Ledyard faces Valley Regional, the two-time Class S runner-up to Sacred Heart and the reigning Shoreline Conference champion, on Dec. 19 at Trinity College.
