Boys basketball: Five players to keep an eye on during the CIAC tournaments

Joe Morelli | March 4, 2018

Catherine Avalone / Hearst Connecticut Media. Amity’s Tyler Thomas was named the SCC’s Player of the Year this season.

Mikey Buscetto, Waterford

Point guard makes things go for the Eastern Connecticut Conference champions. Now Buscetto hopes to help the Lancers win some additional hardware in the Class M division at the Mohegan Sun Arena floor in a couple of weeks.

George Gamble, Windsor

A true difference maker, Windsor wasn’t the same team in the beginning of the season without the injured senior. Now the bruising power forward will make the Warriors a very tough out. He was the best player on the floor in the CCC tournament final against East Catholic – a team Windsor could see for the fourth time in the Division I quarterfinals.

Delshawn Jackson, Prince Tech

For those that live in the Greater New Haven area, you can see the high-scoring senior guard play at Platt Tech in Milford Monday night for the CTC tournament final. Team played a solid non-conference schedule to get ready for the Division III tournament. No one has been able to stop Jackson so far.

Dev Ostrowski, East Lyme

Yes, players in Division III are getting a lot of run here, but deservedly so. Ostrowski was the main reason the Vikings were the regular season champions in the ECC, a tournament finalist and a Top 10 team for a portion of the season. Can score at will from anywhere on the floor.

Tyler Thomas, Amity

The reigning SCC Player of the Year gets it done either in the flow of the offense or when he decides to take games over. Seniors lead in March, and Thomas will need to if the Spartans are to advance to the second week in Division II.

Joe I understand with 5 players someone will get left off the list. Solomon and Gaither should be on every list. Although my favorite player in the CIAC Jadon Archer of Enfield had 47 points and 11 rebounds tonight. Also scored 1000 points tonight in a win vs Harding. 1k in just two years at the school. Yet I never see him mentioned. How many guys on the list can say that? His last 4 games 39, 31, 32, 47 points. He is averaging more points and rebounds than everone on the list except D Jack with points at 27 points and 9 rebs.

Archer was in the thought process with those numbers. I used Sacred Heart as one of the ten things to look for so, in essence the idea of the postseason package is to try and come up with something from 15 different schools. And if you go to 10 players, well you should have had 15. And so on and so on.
It’s like picking the 12 best players in the state. Everyone’s list will be different.

I understand Joe you have a hard job. I was just trying to let everyone know the kid from Enfield CT is the real deal. In my opinion one of the most complete players in the state. If Jadon Archer is left off of any All State Team it will be a travesty.

I’ve been accused of worse. Believe me.

You guys do a great job. I wish we had this site when I played. You guys never had a reason to cover Enfield so I understand why he gets left off the list. He has been consistent all year and now the D1 coaches are starting to notice.

Archer & Jackson Jr. played on the same AAU team this past spring/summer…Imagine what that looked like…It was very entertaining…Archer is definitely a problem & Jackson Jr. reminds me of Kemba Walker

Joe, list is solid. With less than a week left in the tournament 4 of the 5 players are still alive.

Amity and Windsor have not made it to the semifinals yet. No one on this list has better overall stats than Archer. Go to Maxprep you can put players stats side by side. Mike and Tyler’s numbers are not there. I was at the EL vs Enfield game last night and the Enfield vs Harding game Friday. The kid was special on back to back nights.

Where did I mention semifinals?? No where. I will not go to Maxpreps. I know Archer is a great player, as are the rest of the players on this list. You can make this list 20 deep and people would still complain I also know that Joe explained his rational for the five players he wrote about. Apologies for the rant but I had to let it out.

    Solomon & Gaiter McDonald’s All American Nominee’s!

They will be tested again against a very physical Wilbur Cross team..

Remember Cross has an All State defensive back and the guard position.

LOL Cross is not good defensively and will be exposed at both ends of the floor by SH..An All state football player will not translate to stopping SH superior guards

      March 11, 2018 at 9:12 PM

Agree. SH better be well prepped for the train coming from Manchester. EC is the top team in the state and really has no weaknesses.

    • Truth be told says

      March 13, 2018 at 10:50 AM

Johnemo.. The train was derailed .. I guess you were mistaken when you stated every team is playing for second to Ec.. Undefeated record does not guarantee a championship . Whoever wants it more and plays the best defense.. And with the last 4 standing in div1 best defense goes to sacred heart.. Held house to 19 first half points . held cross to 11 per quarter until the fourth.. And shut down there 2 best. 5 and 8 points respectively ..

    • Johnemo says

      March 13, 2018 at 12:09 PM

Yup, I was wrong….Not going to run from it like so many others do.

Never stated that undefeated meant they would win. I legitimately thought they were the best team, kinda still do. But in a 1 and done, anything can happen.

You can claim SH plays the best defense (I’ll give you HC but House was limited all year offensively), but Windsor plays some pretty solid defense as well.

      Should be a great game.

In today’s New Haven Register for Division II championship photo, that is not Brian Curtain jumping for the shot-it was Tanner Thomas.
