Chris Smith confirmed Tuesday night that he has indeed resigned after six seasons coaching his alma mater, Kolbe Cathedral in Bridgeport.
Smith said in a text message that he is stepping down due to family reasons. The Cougars finished 0-20 this past season after going to the South-West Conference tournament final in 2014.
“I have a young son who is turning five,” Smith said via text message. “I am going to work out with him and coach him while he is young. I had a great time at Kolbe and the kids were well-mannered and coachable.”
Smith, still the all-time leading scorer in UConn men’s basketball history, also coached at Derby for a season.
“I would love to coach again, but hopefully on the college level,” Smith said.
