The boys basketball game between undefeated Southern Connecticut Conference teams Fairfield Prep and Career has been moved from Monday night to Sunday at 2 p.m.
The game, which was originally going to be held at Wilbur Cross High, will now be held at the Floyd Little Athletic Center, according to Joe Canzanella, New Haven’s supervisor of athletics. But Canzanella stressed the change was not made due of the shooting that occurred in the vicinity of Hillhouse High as fans were departing from the Hillhouse/Career game on Monday night.
“This was not done because of what happened (Monday) night,” Canzanella said. “We want to get as many people as we can at the game. I had conversations with some of my (security) staff members and asked them, ‘What do you think about the Prep game (being held at Cross)? They said, ‘Not enough room.’”
Canzanella said the Cross gym holds about 1,200 people, which is significantly larger than the tiny gym at Career (capacity of about 300). The Dec. 30 game between Career and Cross was a sellout. The athletic center can hold close to 3,000 for a basketball game.
Canzanella said Sunday was chosen because the FLAC was booked every day next week, and he did not want to push the game back further than that. Canzanella said he spoke with Fairfield Prep athletic director Steve Donahue and the CIAC Tuesday about moving the game to Sunday, and all were in agreement.
The CIAC now allows all teams to reschedule regular-season games to Sunday. This is the first move of any in-state game to a Sunday during this winter season.
Canzanella did acknowledge Hillhouse’s game against New Britain on Saturday has been moved up from 5 p.m. to 2 p.m. so the game will be completed during daylight hours.
“We will do whatever we need to do to keep everybody safe,” Canzanella said. “I don’t want people to come to New Haven and be in fear.”
SCC commissioner Al Carbone said he had no conversations Tuesday with anyone regarding safety issues about athletic events being held in New Haven.
“There is nothing to be alarmed about,” Carbone said. “They have security everywhere. There is a reason why all of the league and state indoor track meets are held there. Joe does a good job.”
One other switch made prior to this week also had to do with events being held at the athletic center. The rematch between Fairfield Prep and Hillhouse will now be held Jan. 31 at 6 p.m. and the SCC indoor track championship meet will be on Jan. 30 at 3 p.m.
