BLOOMFIELD — With a lot of hype surrounding it heading into the season, Bloomfield was up to the task in its opener.

Behind a three-touchdown performance by senior running back Ky’Juon Butler, Bloomfield easily defeated Plainville 53-0.

Despite the lopsided win, the Warhawks feel like they didn’t play their best.

“We won by 53 and we didn’t play a really good first half,” Butler said. “I think if we can play a full game we can be a great team.”

Butler scored on runs of 70 and 21 in the second quarter and then on a 20-yard run in the third to help the Warhawks pull away.

“He’s an awesome kid,” Bloomfield coach Ty Outlaw. “He’s great.”

After a quick touchdown, the Warhawks struggled to move the ball in the air against the Plainville defense.

“We played good defense early,” Plainville coach Tim Shea said. “But we got tired. You can’t keep giving the other team the ball without offensive movement. Defense is going to get tired and they are going to find ways to score. That’s football.”

With the pass game sputtering, Outlaw finally turned to Butler and the ground game.

The senior took over almost immediately, kick-starting the Warhawks’ offense with his 70-yard touchdown run.

“They were loading the box and every play was just a blitz,” Butler said. “So we had to open it up and spread it out so they started to adjust to the pass and then surprise them with a run.”

On the next drive Butler scored his 21-yard touchdown.

Bloomfield sophomore quarterback Daron Bryden threw for three touchdowns, two to David Robinson. Brendan Bish had three sacks in the win.

“Bloomfield is a good team,” Shea said. “Ty has a great team over there. He’s got some guys, got some dudes. It’s going to be fun watching them later in the year.”

Plainville started the game at a disadvantage. Third-year starting quarterback Frank Griffin was ruled out because of illness.

Shea shifted his best overall player, Brady Callahan, under center. But on the first drive, Callahan got hit hard,  sustained an injury and was ruled out for the rest of the game.

“Then it’s plan C,” Shea said. “It’s our sophomore quarterback who we made a quarterback during passing league in the spring.

“We have a lot of work to do and there are a lot of games left. It’s just week one, we have nine games left.”
