WESTPORT—The Staples girls basketball team will have to spend the entire season without one of its top offensive threats.
That didn’t stop the Wreckers from producing more points than any game from a year ago.
A balanced attack led the Wreckers to an impressive opening-night win, a 67-61 triumph over Bethel in the season opener for both teams Monday night. Arianna Gerig, a second team All-FCIAC performer, tore her ACL in the offseason and will miss the campaign.
25 PLAYERS TO WATCH
Elle Fair led Staples with 19 while Nicole Holmes and Marley Lopez-Paul each scored 13. Marisa Shorrock added 10 for Staples (1-0), which led 46-32 after three quarters. The Wreckers held on late as Bethel made a late charge.
Maranda Nyborg led all scorers with 24 for the Wildcats while Vicky Gracy and Brooke Lacey each had 11.
