The CIAC will honor seven individuals who have made significant contributions to high school basketball in Connecticut at the Boys and Girls State Basketball Championships Dedication March 21 at 9 a.m. at The Mohegan Sun’s Cabaret Theater.
Joe Tonelli, a CIAC Executive Staff Member and longtime teacher, coach and athletics director at Notre Dame-West Haven High. In addition, officials John (Buddy) Chernovetz, the IAABO Board 10 Commissioner, and Stephen Donahue, and coaches Nick Augelli (Crosby) and Ed Faulkner (McMahon), and athletics directors Diane Callis (Bulkeley) and Gary Mackowicki (Norwich Free Academy) will receive the 2015 Merit Awards.
Tonelli is a “founding father” of the Connecticut Association of Athletic Directors and has volunteered in nearly every capacity as a contributor to the CIAC. He is a member of the Connecticut High School Coaches Association (CHSCA) Hall of Fame and will be inducted into the National Interscholastic Athletic
Administrators Association (NIAAA) in December.
Augelli is fourth on the all-time wins list among state boys basketball coaches, and the active leader with over 600 wins. That includes three state championships.
The ceremony is open to the public.
